Queer as Folk

Blonde Male Character
This character is gay but is the countertype of this stereotype. This is because he is not 'camp' and does not speak any different from the other male characters. He also does not walk how gay people are expected to walk. This means that people are unable to tell that he is gay until he tells the other character about his new boyfriend. He is not seen to be feminine which people may not expect as this is how people associate gay men to be. This shows the audience that the stereotypes are not always real and they are not a true representation of how all gay men actually are. The character may also be used to show a younger gay audience that they do not have to act 'camp' if they are gay and they can act in which ever way they feel is best for them. This is because if there is a gay man in a TV programme, they normally act feminine and this may pressurise gay boys to act feminine if they are also gay.

Brunette Male Character
This character gets angry when the blonde male says to him 'you missed your chance'. This may mean that this character is gay but does not want to be. This means that he sees being gay as a bad thing and does not wish to be with men. It shows that he feels as though if he tells himself that he is not gay, then it means that he is not and no one will know that he is. He may believe that there is a cure for being gay or that it is just as phase that he will soon get out of. He may also feel as though he is not normal if he is gay and that he is less of a person because he does not like the opposite gender. Because of the fact that he gets angry when the other character says this may mean that he is angry that someone has realised that he is gay and is angry at himself for letting this show.

The Boyfriend
The boyfriend of the blonde male fits the stereotype of gay men. This is because he acts 'camp' and talks in a feminine way. This is the representation of gay men and this is how people expect gay men to act and talk. He also walks in a way that gay men are expected to walk which shows how he further fits the stereotype. He also dresses up with the little girl which shows that he is in to, what is seen to be, feminine things. He also tells a story of how he has dressed up as Brittany Spears before and rein-acted the music video. This shows how he chose to dress up as a women rather than a man which is a stereotype of gay men. This is because gay men are seen to be in to more feminine things rather than masculine. This character fits in with Tessa Perkins theory that most homosexual men talk with a lisp and act feminine.

The Women
The women is telling her children how she got with the man who is talking when she was 15. This shows that she is the countertype of heterosexual women as she does not stick to one person. She did not wait until she was married until she slept with her husband but instead had sex with someone that she didn't know. This is the counter type as heterosexual people are seen to only have one partner and they are seen to be with this partner for the whole of their life. However, this female character is talking about how she slept with this man so shows how she has not only had one partner.

The Mother
The mother of the blonde male character is a heterosexual women. She fits the stereotype that all heterosexual people have children as she has two. However, she is no longer with her husband which shows that she is the countertype of the idea that heterosexual women stay with one man their whole life. However, this fits Tessa Perkins theory that heterosexual couples have high levels of divorce.

Camera Shots
Long Shot- There is a long shot which allows the audience to see what the character is wearing and how he is walking. He is wearing a school uniform which shows his age and shows that people of all ages have their own sexuality and there is not a certain age in which people suddenly decide what sexuality they are. He is also walking in a way that looks quite feminine but it a way that is forced. This may be used to show that this is the way in which he chooses to show his sexuality as he feels as though he is unable to present this in any other way. By it looking quite forced, this may be used to show how he feels as though he has to walk like this if he is gay which shows that there are unfair stereotypes in society.
Over The Shoulder- There are over the shoulder shots when the blonde male character is talking to the other male, brunette character. This is used to show the characters point of view and to show the character how the other is seeing them. This is also a shot which shows their facial expressions so that we are able to see what they may be thinking. The first way that the brunette male looks at the blonde male is by looking him up and down. This is quite a intimidating action and may be used for this purpose. This character may be trying to be shown in a way that makes him look as though he is cruel and a bully. This may be used to show the difficulties that gay men have to go through and the stereotypes that come along with their sexuality.
Two Person Shot- There is a two person shot which is used to show both of the characters reactions at the same time. This is when the brunette character is angry at the other male character for saying that he has 'missed his chance'. This shows that this character may be ashamed by his sexuality and does not want anyone to know about it. This shows the difficulties that people who are gay have to go through and feel as though they are different if they are not straight.
Long Shot- There is another long shot used which shows the blonde male and his boyfriend. Here, we are able to see what the boyfriend is wearing and how he is walking. People are able to link stereotypes to this character from what they see.

Editing
Cuts- There are cuts used when the conversation between the male characters is taking place at the beginning of the scene. The cuts are used to enable the audience to see the two characters as they speak to each other. The shots are over the shoulder of each character, jumping from one to the other as the speech changes to a character. These shots may be used to show that these character are the same, they are both homosexual. This is because the shots allow a familiarity to take place between the two characters.
Cutting Rhythm- During the conversation, the cutting rhythm is quite slow, allowing time for all of the speech to be said before it changes. This makes the audience feel as though this is just a conversation between two friends who respect each other. However, when the brunette male character become angry, the rhythm changes and the cutting becomes a lot quicker. The anger is witnessed by the audience through the sudden cuts and it makes the conversation look a lot less smooth.
Jump Cut- There is a jump cut which takes place to change scenes. The scenes change from the school to other characters in another scene. This switch may be used to signify that these characters are seen to be different because of their sexuality. It may be used to show how people view people being homosexual completely different to those who are heterosexual and they are not viewed to be equal.
Jump Cut- There is another jump cut which changes from the boys walking down the street to all four characters sitting around a tale having dinner. This jump cut shows that time has passed and that it is not later in the day than it was when the last part of the clip took place.

Sound
'Got myself this boyfriend'(Diegetic)- This is what the male character says to the other at the beginning of the scene. This may be used to show how he does not see him as being important but he sees the fact that he has a boyfriend the important thing. This may be used to show that gay people are not seen to be important and they are not seen to be equal to straight people.
'I only had him the once'(Diegetic)- This is what the women says to the other characters as they are sitting around the table. This line may be used to suggest that she has slept with a lot of people and has one night stands. This is opposite to the stereotype that heterosexual women only have one partner for the whole of their lives. This shows how stereotypes do not apply to everyone who is in that group as people are not the same just because they have the same sexuality.
'Sex and that'(Diegetic)- This is what the blonde characters says to his boyfriend as they are walking down the street. Here, he is telling his boyfriend to not talk about sex whilst they are having dinner with his family. This fits the stereotype that gay men are obsessed with sex and that this is all they talk about. Also, by him telling the other character what to do it shows that he believes he does not know how to behave and believes that he will act inappropriately.
'That's not Tudors and Stuarts'(Diegetic)- By the blonde character proving his boyfriend wrong this is trying to make the boyfriend look unintelligent and as though he does not know what he is talking about. This may make some humour for the audience at the expense of the male character. This may be used to try and show that gay men are not intelligent and that they do not care about education.
'Big frocks though, same difference'(Diegetic)- This is the characters response to what has just been said. This suggests that all the character cares about is clothes and fashion and this is the only thing he thinks about. This may be used to show the stereotype that gay men are very feminine as this is a thing that is normally associated with femininity.
'I know you're new to all of this'(Diegetic)- This is what the mother says to her son when they are talking in the kitchen. This line may be used to suggest that being gay is just a phase that he has gotten into and will soon be back out of it, which is a stereotype that a lot of people feel about homosexual people.

Mise-en-Scene
School Uniform- The characters at the beginning of this scene are all in uniform which shows that they are at school. This shows the age of the characters and shows that sexuality is inbuilt and is not something that is decided at a certain age. The uniform also shows how all teens are grouped together and are acted to act one way as they all look the same. This may be used to show how older people do not believe that teenagers are capable of knowing what their sexuality is and sees them all to be the same.
Bright, feminine clothing- The boyfriend of the other charter is wearing quite bright, feminine clothing. This shows his personality as he is seen to act quite feminine. This is the style of clothing which people would expect homosexual men to wear so therefore fits the stereotype of this character. The bright clothing may also be used to show how homosexual people are seen to be different and stand out from the crowd and people who are heterosexual.
Masculine House- The house colours are seen to be quite masculine colours. This is unusual as the mother is a single mother as the father left. The masculine colours may be used to show how the mother believes that the children still need some masculinity in their life and is expressing this through the colours of the house. This may also be used to show that heterosexual women have to have a man in their life as this is expected by society.
Bright Colours- The colours in the kitchen are quite bright and feminine. This may be used to show how women are expected to be the gender who are in the kitchen the most and do all of the cooking. This shows the stereotype of heterosexual women and how this character fits this stereotype.

Representation of Gender- Sherlock Holmes

Camera Shots
Establishing Shot- There is an establishing shot used at the beginning of the clip. This is used to set the time of the clip and to also allow the audience to know in what please that clip is taking place. By using a time that was in the past this may suggest that things have changed since this clip and that men and women are different now. This gives us an insight to how gender used to be back in the time when this was set.
Zoom In- There is a zoom in on Sherlock when they are in the carriage. This is indicating to us that he is the important character in the clip and he is the one who we should be focusing on. This may also may tell us that he is the intelligent one and he is the most important person on the carriage. However, people may not realise this until after because, the audience believes, he is the person who is being taken somewhere and he is not going by his free will.
Mid Shot- There is a mid shot to show the man holding Sherlock. This tells us that the man who is holding Sherlock is the person who has the authority and he is higher up in society than Sherlock. This shows how eve though they are the same gender, they are not equal and one man can still have power over another.
Close Up- There are close ups of Sherlock and the other man in the scene as Sherlock is being given to him. This is showing their facial expressions and how they differ between the two men. The man, who we see as being the more important one, looks glad at the fact that Sherlock has been taken to him whilst Sherlock looks worried about being in his presents. This shows how one man can be scared of another and how people may differ in a gender.
Mid Shot- There is a mid shot that shows Sherlock being punched by the man who has taken him to this setting. The mid shot is to emphasise the act of violence and to make us notice the action. This may be used to show how men gain authority over each other as he may feel like he now has more power over Sherlock through this action. It also shows that even though they are both the same gender, if someone has more authority and power over another, they will use it for the wrong reasons.
Two Person Shot- There is a two person shot that includes both the male character and Sherlock. The important male character is in the foreground and is the person we can see clearly whilst Sherlock is in the background and we are unable to see him as clearly. This may be used to show how the male character does not see Sherlock as important and he does not make an impact on his life. This could also be used to show how society pay a lot of attention to the men who they see as to have more power where as other men are left in the dark and are not thought about.
Close Up- There is a close up of handcuffs as they slide across the floor to the male character. This shows emphasises the fact that Sherlock was able to take the handcuffs off of himself whilst he was in the smoke. This may be used to show the fact that he is intelligent and also gives the audience a clue to this being planned. This is because he may not of been able to take the handcuffs off of himself if he did not have a key and did not have practice of doing it before. This shows how some men may be doubted and seen to be unintelligent but they are very intelligent and know what to do for the things that they want to get done. This is because he was able to get into the scene and find the clues whilst pretending he was taken there.
Low Angle- There is a low angle shot that looks up at the male character. This is used to show how he still feels important even though he does not know where Sherlock is. As he has the gun, he is not worried about Sherlocks where a bouts and is not threatened by him. This shows how men may feel as though they are important just because they may be able to do harm to another male.
Mid Shot- There is a mid shot of the gun that the male character is holding. This shows that the gun is moving side to side so suggests that the male character does not know where Sherlock is. This shows that the powerful and important men may not be as clever as they seem and may not know how to handle situations like this one.
Extremely Long Shot- There is an extremely long shot to show Sherlock jumping out of the window. As he jumps he dives which shows that he know what he was doing and knew that he would have the exit through the window. This shows how this was all planned and emphasises his intelligence. There is boat waiting for him that holds two male characters and a women. There is a male character that pulls him out of the water. This shows how he is playing the role of the hero which is a male stereotype.

Editing
Cross Cutting- There is cross cutting between the male character and Sherlock. This shows how these are the important characters in the clip. This also is used to show how the two characters are holding eye contact. This shows how neither of them are backing down and how they both want to be the dominant one. This could link to the idea of he alpha male and show how both the characters want to have this role.
Flash Back- As Sherlock is looking around the room, there are close ups of certain items that he is looking at. After the close up, there is a flash back of that item in a scene. This shows how Sherlock's mind is working and how is he is putting the pieces together. This shows us that he is there for a purpose and he is trying to work out the pieces as soon as he gets in there. This shows the intelligence in some men and could also show that he is deceiving as he was able to get into the scene that he wants to to enable him to sort out the crime mystery.
Flash Back- There are more flashbacks whilst Sherlock is explaining what he found to the male character. This shows how Sherlock is right with what he thought and how he has been able to link the items back to the crime. This shows his intelligence and how he is able to put clues together. This may be used to show the intelligence of men and how they are shown to be the more intelligent gender and the gender which is expected to be able to fulfill jobs like this.
Flash Back- There is another flashback which shows the parts of thee beginning scene that were not included in the clip. This is to show that the whole thing was planned and Sherlock knew what he was doing. This shows his level of deceit and how he is able to plan and then preform a task to the level where it even fools the audience. This may be used to show how men may get judged to quickly and people think that what you see is what you get with men.
Smooth Editing- Overall, the editing is smooth and all of the clips look as though they have been put together smoothly. This could be used so show how Sherlock's plan is going smoothly and everything that he wants to happen is happening. This may be used to show how men are able to get things done smoothly and nothing goes wrong for them.

Sound
Music- There is non-diegetic music which plays from the starting of the clip. This music sounds dangerous which gives the audience the feel as though something bad is going to happen. The music is quite fast and then slows down throughout the scene which makes the beginning of the clip seem chaotic and as though a lot of happening. When the music slows down is when they are entering the building which shows that even though it is a dangerous place to be, it is calmer than it was outside. This could be used to show that Sherlock found it harder at the beginning as he may of been unsure if the plan was going to work which would of resulted in danger for him. However, when is managed to get into the room, he was more positive and he felt as though there was more chance of his plan working. This shows how men who may seem confident may not always be that confident and they may doubt themselves some or most of the time.
Shoes- Sherlock says to the male character 'Very distinctive those shoes of yours'. This is showing how Sherlock is collecting all of the evidence that he needs in order to know that is was this male character that committed the crime. However, the male character is not aware at the fact this is what he is doing and just feels as though Sherlock is complimenting his shoes. This may be used to show that not all men are as intelligent as each other and sometimes they can be vein and often think about the clothes that they wear.
Murder- There is diegetic sound when the male character says to Sherlock 'It's not murder, it's mercy'. This shows how he does not believe that killing someone is murder and that in fact it is a good think that they were murdered. This shows how he feels that he is better than all of the people around him and he feels as though his life is more sacred than theirs. This gives the impression that men are cold blooded killers and do not feel bad if they do anything that is wrong.
Music- The music, which is non-diegetic sound, that is played at the beginning starts in the middle of the clip but then becomes louder and suddenly stops. This is as the male characters grabs a gun from his drawer and gets prepared to shoot Sherlock. However, when he turns around he sees that the room is covered in smoke and he is unable to see where Sherlock is. The music represents the danger and whilst the music is playing and getting louder, the audience believes that Sherlock is going to be shot. However, as the male character can no longer see Sherlock he is unable to shoot him at that moment so the music stops as the danger has disappeared. This shows how the male character has been outsmarted by Sherlock and how, this time, he is not going to be able to do what he wanted, which is to kill. This may be used to show how the men who use violence are the ones who are not very intelligence and can be beaten easily.
Talking Behind Smoke- Sherlock is explaining what he found to the male character as he stays in the smoke where he is unable to be seen. This may be used to show that even though Sherlock is the smarter one, he is still scared by this male character and wants to make sure that he can not be seen. This may be trying to show that men can still be scared of other men, even if they can out-smart them. As Sherlock can not be seen but his voice can still be heard loudly, this may be used to act as a conscience of the male character. This may be used to show that even the men who are seen to be the toughest, may still be scared and may feel bad for what they have done to someone.
Music- There is more non-diegetic sound when the male character is searching for Sherlock in the room. This music could be said to be quite western which could then link to cowboys. Cowboys are known for shootings and this links back to the fact that the male character wants to shoot  Sherlock. This may be suggesting that shooting people isn't normal in the society that they live in. It may be used to show that men who murder should not be treated as though they are part of that society and that time.
Gun Shot- There is a gun shot which is then followed by Sherlock falling out of the window. This gives the impression that the male character has managed to kill Sherlock whilst he is trying to escape. This would have meant that Sherlock was unable to out-smart the male character and he has gained his role in society back. However, we soon realise that the male character did in fact not shoot Sherlock and he jumped out the window to escape. This shows that the Sherlock did out-smart the male character. This leaves the audience feeling as though the male character is not as intelligent as he makes out and he should not be seen to be as important as he is.
Man On Boat- The man on the boat says to the old man 'Technically that isn't the top window'. This shows that he is disagreeing with the old man in order for his views to be right. This links in with the idea that all men have to be right and they will argue their point until they are seen to be right.
Woman- The woman on the boat does not speak for the part of the clip which she is in. This shows how women were not seen to be important in this time zone and their opinions were not important. It shows that women where just there for men and they were not seen to be as important as men.

Mise-en-Scene
Dark Surroundings- The room is quite dark as not much light is coming in and the interior is dark. This shows that this character is quite a dark one and how he is not seen to be happy. It shows that he is the evil and links to the fact that he is a murderer. This may show that men are seen to be the more miserable gender and how they are seem to be the gender that does the worst things.
Windows- The fact that he has a lot of windows shows that even though he is full of gloom, he is trying to shine some light into his life and he is trying to become a better person. It may also be used to show that even though he is mostly seen as bad, there is a little good in him. This may be used to show that men are seen to be the violent gender and are not seen to have good inside of them.
Clothes- The male character's clothes are seen to be smart and looks as though he makes an effort. This may make the audience feel as though he is important even before he talks. However, Sherlock's clothes look quite dirty and he does not look as smartly dressed as the other male character which automatically gives the impression that he is not as important and intelligent as the male character. This shows how men are automatically judged on the way that they dress and the way in which they are viewed differs on how smartly they are dressed.
Tidy Surroundings- The room that the scene is set in is tidy and organised. This shows that the male character is organised and takes care of his surroundings. This goes against what people automatically feel about men. This is that they are messy and do not look after their surroundings. This shows how society may wrongly judge men and have wrong perceptions about the gender.
Gun- The male character pulls out a gun with intentions to shoot Sherlock. This shows how he deals with situations and how he acts, which is with the use of violence. This is fitting the stereotype of some men being violent and using violent acts as the resolution to everything.
Clues- The fact that Sherlock is able to find the clues that he needs on the man's clothes shows that he is careless and has not thought about covering his tracks. This may show that he has not thought about it and can therefore be seen as not being very intelligent. This may be used to link to the thought that men can be careless and not care about the little details. However, it may also be because he does not care and does not believe that anybody will be able to work out the fact that he killed someone. This shows how he feels as though he is better than everyone else and feels as though no one else is as clever as he is. This may make people feel like men are vein and think that they are better than everybody else.
Smoking Pipe- When the male character finally can see Sherlock, we see that he is smoking a pipe. Pipe's are normally liked to old age and wisdom. By Sherlock smoking the pipe we link him to wisdom and intelligence. This is after he was able to get himself out of the handcuffs and is expressing that he is smarter than the male character. This could be used to show that the men who are seen to be less powerful are in fact the intelligent ones and are the people who are able to deceive people.
Old Man- The old man who is in control of the boat looks quite dirty and not very well kept. This is as his clothes look dirt and not very smart. He also has a long beard that looks like he has been growing for a long time. This shows how different men dress different and show their appearance differently. It also shows how men are judged differently depending on their appearance.
Woman- The woman on the boat is wearing red lipstick. This shows how she is being used as a sexual object. This is because res is seen to be a sexual colour and lips are seen to be a sexual part of the body. This means that through wearing the red lipstick, she is being seen as a sexual object. This backs up the idea of the woman only being there for the use of the man and not being seen as being important.
Lighter Outside- The lighting is lighter at the end than it has been throughout the clip. This shows that Sherlock now has nothing to worry about as he has been able to carry out his plan and it has gone smoothly and how he wanted it go to. This shows how he has been able to get out of the doom and gloom and the danger of murder. He has also been able to collect the evidence he needed to collect in order to prove that he has the right person.

Mise-en-Scene

Colour
  • The scene starts with dull colours. This shows that they are lower class as dull colours are normally the colours that are the cheapest to buy. Dell colours are normally associated with men so show that it is predominantly male decor. It is also quite blue which may be used to show that they are unhappy and do not enjoy being lower class. It may also be used to show that they do not like the place that they live and want to move into a better house.
  • The father is also wearing dark colours which blend in to the decor. This may show that it was his choices for the house and he had all of the say. However, it could also mean that the father brings darkness to the family as dull colours are normally seen to be bad. He could be seen to be the person in the family who brings all of the gloom. It could also show that he is unhappy and does not enjoy being lower class.
  • The rest of the family are dressed in bright colours which show that they are seen to be the happiness in the family. It may also show the father spends all of his money on them as the brighter clothes are the ones which cost the most money. By him spending more money on his children's clothes it shows that he cares about them and would rather spend money on them than himself.
  • The baby is pink which is the brightest colour in this scene. This could indicate the the baby is the thing that brings the most happiness to the family and is the person that they all care about.
  • The house door is red which normally is used to indicate danger. This could show that people see lower class people a danger to society. It also may show that people do not want to go into their house as they see them as danger.
Costume
  • The people in this clip are also wearing quite casual clothing which could show that they are working class. This is because we can see that they do not spend a lot of money on their clothes and stick to the basics.
  • From the fathers clothing, we can see that he does not have a job. This is because he does not look as though he is about to go out to work. This is as his clothes are quite dirty and they do not look like they would fit in with a job. This fits in with the family being lower class as they would not have any money coming in from working.
  •  The boys are dressed in tracksuits which fit in with the stereotype of teenagers that are lower class. Teens that wear tracksuits are seen to be a threat to society and are seen to be dangerous. Lower class children are seen to be dangerous and are seen to take part in a lot of criminal activity. This shows how the boys wearing tracksuits fit in with the fact that they are lower class.
  • When the family are outside, the business man that gives them the money is wearing a suit. From this, we can see that he is middle class because it looks like he has a good job that will pay a lot. Middle class people are stereotypically known for wearing suits.
Lighting
  • The lighting in the clip is quite simple which matches the interior. This shows that they do not want to spend a lot of money on lighting and they want to stick to what they need. This can be used to show that they are lower class.
  • They use a lot of natural lighting which could be seen to show that they do not care about other people judging them and they do not mind who they are. This shows that they do not worry about people judging them because they are lower class.
  • There are curtains on the windows which could be used to show that they are seen to be outcasts from society. It shows that people do not want to include lower class people into society and they would rather ignore them and separate them.
Body Language/Posture
  • The children are leaning on the table which shows that they are lower class. This is because lower class people are shown to have little manners and not leaning on the table is classed as manners.
  • The father is slouched over and he is not walking straight which may be used to show that he is drunk. By the action of him leaning over, this could be used to show that the weight of responsibly is on him and he struggles to cope with everyday life. This may be used to show that being lower class is hard for people and they have a lot to cope with.
  • Most of the characters arms are crossed at various parts of the clip. This is used to show their anger and to show that they do not enjoy being lower class.  It may also be used to show that they are angry with the father for letting them become lower class and not doing anything about it.
  • The teenager with the baby is cradling the baby tightly. This may be used to show that she is protecting the baby from being lower class and does not want the same for her baby when she is older.
Framing
  • The dad is away from the family at the beginning of this clip. This may be used to show the father is not close with his children and do not have a good bond with them. This may be because his children do not like the fact that he is an alcoholic and doesn't work.
  • The rest of the family are close together which show that they all have a close bond. This shows unity which is a stereotype for lower class people. The stereotype is that lower class families are close and strongly rely on each other.
  • However, all of the family are standing together at the end which shows that they have become close again. This shows that they were able to overcome their differences and accept their father again.
  • The table that the children are sitting around is covered in empty alcohol. This shows that the children are surrounded by his bad habits and have had to put up with them for their whole life. It could also be used to show that the alcohol is the center of the father's world and his children come after that.
Hair and Make-Up
  • The father has long, greasy, messy hair. This shows that he is not bothered by his appearance and does not put effort into his hair. It shows that he does not wash a lot as he has greasy hair. However, this may also mean that he is unable to afford shampoo which shows that he does not have enough money to buy basic items. The fact that his hair is like this shows that he does not have a job as this makes him look unprofessional and is not a hairstyle that people who work have.
  • The girl who has a baby has her hair tied back into a bun. This shows that she does not have time to do her hair now that she has a baby. This hairstyle is also quite child-like which may be used to emphasis the fact that she is a teenage mother, which is a stereotype for lower class teenage girls. Her make-up is quite simplistic which reinforces these points. It could also show that even though she does not have much time, she still wants to make a little bit of effort with her appearance.
  • Both of the teenage boys have shaven heads. This may show that they cannot afford to go the hair dressers as they are able to do this hairstyle themselves. This is also known to be how prisoners have their hair so links in with the boys being seen as dangerous. It may also be used to foreshadow their later life and where society thinks that they will end up because of their class.
  • The little boy has quite long hair, like his father. This may be used to show that the boy is also going to end up being like his father, lower class. This shows the cycle which most lower class people find themselves in and unable to escape from.
  • The business man has styles hair which shows that he is middle class. He has quite a formal style which shows that he has a good job.
Facial Expressions

  • The fathers facial expressions are rather blank for the clip and he does not show a lot of expressions. This may show that he is used to living as lower class and it does not phase him anymore. It may also be used to show that he has lost hope and he does not feel as though he would ever be able to get out of him. He also looks as though he is drunk which portrays his alcoholism and his addiction, which is a stereotype of lower class people.
  • Most of the time, the other characters look angry. This may be used to show that they are angry at the situation and how they are angry at the fact that they are lower class. This may also be used to show that they are angry at the fact that their dad is not doing anything to help them and they know they they will be stuck being lower class.
Props
  • There are a lot of empty alcohol bottles which show that the father may be addicted to alcohol. It also shows that they do not tidy the house often. This shows that they are not bothered about their surroundings and the place in which they live. It may also be used to show that they are lazy which shows why the father has not got a job.
  • They have a lot of locks on the door which may show the kind of area they live in. This shows that they live in a place which has high crime rate, which is typically known to be a lower class area. This is as lower class people are stereotypically known to to be involved in crime and they are all seen to be criminals.
  • There are pictures and drawings up on the wall. This shows how the family are close and how the house is family orientated. A stereotype of lower class people is the families are close and stick together. By images of the family being up on the wall, it shows how they are proud of their family and want to display their memorable moments. By the pictures being displayed on the walls, it shows how the father respects his children and want them to feel good about themselves.

Her hair is also quite dry which shows that she must style it a lot therefore reinforcing the fact that she cares about her appearance.
  • She is wearing make-up which shows that she likes to make an effort on her appearance. This could be used to show how she wants to attract her husband which could lead us on to believe that their love is no longer how it used to be.

  • She has simple but heave make-up on. She is only wearing eye-liner and lipstick, however, her eye-liner is thick and her lipstick is red which is quite a bold colour. This shows that her make-up is the opposite from her hair and portrays her in a different way. Her make-up shows how she is trying to look older and sexual.
  • Her skin looks healthy as it has a little glow which is also used to show her innocence and child-like personality. Healthy skin shows that she is young.

  • She has her elbows on the table, where as her parents do not, showing that she may have little respect for her parents and she does not follow their rules. It also shows that she may be quite rude and not have many manners as most people do not put their elbows on the table whilst you are having dinner.
Man

  • He has is fists clenched which indicates that he may be angry. This may be used to show the fact that he is angry that he is the only one out of the pair that is trying in their relationship. This may be used to show his frustration at the fact that he is being shown little respect by both his daughter and partner.
Clothing
Women
  • She is wearing quite formal clothing which may show that this dinner is important and she has dressed up for it, which could also lead to us believing that this does not happen often and they are not used to all of them being around the same table, at the same time for dinner.
  • She is wearing a silk shirt which shows that this family is wealthy and has a lot of money to spend on clothes. The silk shirt could also be used to attract the man which shows that their love may not be how it used to be.
Girl
  • She has quite casual clothing on which shows that she has not made as much effort as her parents have. This shows that she does not feel as though she has to dress up for a family mean. This could be used to show how she already as her parents love and does not feel as though she has to impress them.
  • She has quite bright clothing on which may be used to show that she is the only brightness in her parents lives and she is the only good thing they have. This is because the rest of the surroundings are quite dark and she is the only thing that stands out.
  • Her clothing is also quite unique which could be used to show that she has quite a unique personality.
Man
  • The clothing that he is wearing is quite old and formal and is a lot older than the age that we think that he is. This could show how he does not feel as though he has to dress up for the women, showing the fracture between their relationship.
Facial Expressions
Women
  • The women looks quite emotionless which shows that she does not want to be there and she does not feel anything towards the man. The only slight emotion that she does appear to be showing is un-impressed which shows that she is not happy with what the man has just said.
  • She is staring directly at the man which could be used to show that she wants to have his attention, either for him to notice her or for him to see the face that she is giving him.
Girl
  • The girl looks quite angry which could be used to show that she is not happy with what her father has just said. She could also be angry at the situation and is annoyed with her parents relationship.
  • The mother and daughter and showing quite similar looks which could be used to show the bond between the two. This could be used to show how they both dislike and are against the father.
Man
  • The man looks as though he is laughing showing that he found what he said funny and may not understand why the mother and daughter do not share the same views as him. This could be used to show the differences between the family and how they differ between them all.
Framing
All of the family is spaced out which shows that the family is not a close family and may be used to show the broken relationships between all of them. The child is in the middle of the two parents which is used to show how they are all they care about and how she is important to them. She also may be in the middle to show how she is the important character and how she is the only one that matters in the scene.
All of the props are centered around the child which reinforces the fact that she is the important one to both her parents and the scene.

Lighting
The candles, that are the only light, are around the girl showing that she may be the only light in their world. This could also be used to show that she is the only person that is keeping her parents together. The rest of the lights are off showing that that relationship has been lost between the parents. Also, candles are only temporary and will run out showing that the child's love might run out towards the parents or eventually the relationship between the parents will eventually be over.
The adults are quite dark which may be used to show their hatred towards each other. IT could also be used to show that they are not important in the scene and we should not be focusing on them.
There is a window behind the father that letting a little bit of light through. This may be used to show how the father believes that there is still something between the two adults. It is used to show how he has hope and believes there is still something to fight for.
However, the mother does not have a window or and source of light behind her showing that she has lost hope for their relationship and doesn't believe there is anything worth fighting for.
The lighting is quite dark meaning that you are unable to see the items in the room. This could show how wealth doesn't matter to this couple and just because they are rich and have a lot of possessions, it doesn't mean that they are happy.
The curtains are closed to cover the windows. This may be used to show how they do not want the outside world to know about their problems and do not want people to see into their private life.

Props
The women is drinking wine which shows how she is trying to escape from the situation and her life in general. The bottle of wine is half empty so shows how much she has drunk, this could be used to show that she may be an alcoholic.
The decorations on the table such as the vase and the candles show the wealth of the family This is because these items are usually shown to represent wealth and upper class.
There is flowers on the table that are placed in front of the daughter. As this is the only life, this could be used to show that the daughter is their life and the most important thing to them.

Colour
The women's has a blue top which is the same colour as the table mats. This could be used to show that she was the person who laid the table and prepared the dinner which could lead us on to believe that she is a house wife. The colour blue is also classed as a sad colour which may be used to show that she is unhappy in the situation that she is on.
The colour of the flowers, that are in front of the daughter, are red. This is the only vibrant colour in the room which shows how the daughter is the important character. Red also is seen to be a sexual colour which shows how the daughter is trying to be sexual and attractive, which links to her make-up.

Representation of Regional Identity- Our Friends

  • The clip starts with a mid-shot of the the couple, Nicky and Helen join the other couple, Mary and Tosker, at the table for dinner. The fact that Helen is the person who is  joining the people who live in Newcastle could be used to show that she is not from Newcastle and this is not the place that she is used to. It could also be used to show how the rest of the characters are comfortable with where they live and the area that they come from where as Helen is not used to this city and they are used to the place where they live. This could be used to show that she is someone that has been brought up differently and is used to a different kind of life. However, they are all in a restaurant that looks as though it is quite posh and expensive which is the kind of environment that we associate with Helen.
  • All of the four characters are dressed up and you can tell that they have made an effort for this meal. This could indicate that this meal is important and may be a celebration of something. This shows that the restaurant that they are all at is quite posh and expensive. This may show that they are all entering the world that Helen is used to. This is because this meal seems to be to find out about Helen so it would make sense for them to be in environment that most like Helen.
  • There is diegetic sound when Helen asks Mary and Tosker 'have you ever had the Gamberoni?'. Tosker then has to look at the menu in order to find out what this food is as he is unsure of what it is. Once he has found it in the menu he then replies by saying 'Oh yeah, they're prawns'. By Tosker using the simplified name for the food this may be trying to show that people who are from Newcastle are not as smart as people from London, the area from which Helen is from. It may also suggest that they do not have as much money as they may not be used to eating out as much and therefore do not know the names of these foods in this kind of situation.
  • Helen then goes on to ask what the Prawns are like, which is diegetic sound, as she wants to know whether she should order them or not. Tosker then replies by describing what the prawns look like in which all of the people from Newcastle reply to by laughter. Here he is trying to be funny and make a joke, however, Helen does not laugh and does not understand what he means, This is showing how Helen maybe does not have a sense of humour and she is also thinking that he is not as intelligent as her as she believe that he does not understand what she is asking him. This may be trying to show that people who are from London are all like this and none of them have a sense of humour and they feel as though that they are better than everyone else.
  • There is a mid-shot of Tosker which shows him as he is trying to eat the spaghetti. This shows him and  the table where his plate of spaghetti is places. he then tries to eat some of the spaghetti off of his fork. However, all of the spaghetti falls off of his fork and back onto his plate before he is able to place this food into his mouth. This may be trying to show how Geordies may not have very good table manners and may not be used to situations where he eats in posh resteraunts. By the camera only focusing on him and not showing anyone else in the shot, it is trying to emphasis the fact that he is unable to eat the spaghetti.
  • Tosker insteps the conversation that Mary and Helen is having, which is diegetic sound. Helen replies to this by saying 'I'm sorry I was talking to Mary'.  This shows Helen is not used to people interrupting the conversation and she is used to only talking to one person  at a time. This may be used to suggest how people from Newcastle do not have manners and they will talk over people and not see a problem, with this. It may also be used to show how people from London, like Helen, have manners and are not scared to say what they are feeling as she tells him straight away that she was talking to Mary and that she does not want him to join the conversation.
  • Tosker lights his cigarette after Helen corrects him for interrupting the conversation that she was having with Mary. This could be his way of saying that she will not change him and his way of saying that he doesn't care what she thinks of him. It may also be his way of dealing with being in a surrounding that he is not used to. Smoking is typically seen to be a lower class thing showing that Newcastle is a lower class than London.
  • 'What's one of them?'- Tosker says this to Helen when she tells him what she does for a living. This may be used to show how Newcastle has simple jobs and does not have many 'posh' jobs. It also may be used to emphasis the fact that Geordies are not as intelligent as this is not a 'proper' sentence. It also may give the impression that the area that Helen comes from is a lot more upper class as she has a job that other people may not have heard of.
  • Helen does not answer Tosker's question and in fact stares at him blankly. This may be because she does not know if he is joking or not or because she does not want to answer the question as she may not respect him enough. However, both of these things show that people who are from London can be quite rude and disrespectful. It shows that they think that they are better than other people from the fact that she does not feel the need to reply to him. However, she does reply to him when he asks about money. This shows how she cares about money and wants to show off how much money she makes. This shows how people like Helen show off about how much money they make.
  • When the waiter comes over to see if they want any dessert, Tosker asks 'How much are they?'. This shows how much Tosker cares about the money that he has and does not want to spend it on expensive food, This may also show that he may not make a lot of money so does not have the money to spend on expensive food even if he wanted to. This could be used to indicate that people from Newcastle are tight with money. However, to this question, the waiter just laughs. This may be because he is not used to people going out for a meal but then asking how much it is. This also shows how people do not take Tosker seriously as this is the second time that he has been ignored. This could link to the stereotype that people from Newcastle are annoying.
  •  There are close ups of all of the characters when Helen and Tosker start having an argument. This is so that the audience focuses on their facial expressions in order to feel how they are feeling. At this moment in time, it is showing how they are all equal and that Helen is not seem to be at a higher authority because of where she is from as they are having an argument that is showing the more authoritative and less jokey side of Tosker.
  • Helen begins to laugh when she no longer wants to argue with Tosker. This shows how she is regaining her authority and power and wants to make Tosker look stupid. Tosker does not know how to reply to this and just goes silent. This is showing the rudeness of Helen which leads us on to believe that all people form London are like this.
  • Nicky then offers to pay for Tosker and Mary and Tosker replies with 'You're not'. This is the way in which Tosker believes that he is able to regain his dignity and show that he is also powerful. Most of the talk has been about money and what has been concluded is the fact that Helen has a lot of money and Tosker does not. Tosker believes that if he allowed Nicky to pay for him, this would make Helen have something else that she is able to have over him and he does not want that. He wants to be able to prove that he is just as good as her. This may be used to show how people who are from poorer parts of the country do not want to be seen to be this and do not want to be treated differently because they may not have as much money as someone from London.
  • Helen says to Nicky 'Brace the change, brace the future' to which Nicky looks uneasy at the thought of. This could show how Nicky does not want to change and he likes the fact that he is from Newcastle. This may also show how he does not want to become like Helen as he does not like the way she handled the situation with Tosker. This may be trying to show how people do not like, or aspire to be like, people who are from richer parts of the country.
Regional Identity

Stereotypes and Countertypes
Scottish
One of the stereotypes of Scottish people is that they all have ginger hair. This stereotype has been created due to the fact that a lot of people in Scotland are ginger. However, not that many people are ginger compared to the population of Scotland and it is a stereotype that has been exaggerated.
  • A stereotype is Amy out of Doctor Who. She is the Doctors companion that is ginger and Scottish meaning that she fits this stereotype.
  • A countertype is Connor from Waterloo Road. This is a TV drama that is based in a school involving school children and teachers. Connor is a Scottish school boy who is brunette therefore being the counter-type of a Scottish ginger person.
Another stereotype of Scottish people is that they are aggressive and violent. This is a stereotype that may make a lot of people afraid of Scottish people and shines a bad light on them.
  • An example of this stereotype is Cameron who is a character out of Hollyoaks. As soon as he was introduced to the soap he tried to kill another character. He also threatens people in order to get what he wants.
  • A countertype of this stereotype is Imogen who is a school girl from Waterloo Road. She has never been aggressive or violent to anybody and is therefore the opposite of this stereotype.
The third stereotype of Scottish people is that they drink a lot and are often drunk. Scottish people do not drink anymore than other people but this is a stereotype that is well known for people who are Scottish, especially the men.
  • An example of this stereotype is Christine Mulgrew who is the head teacher out of Waterloo Road. She is a Scottish person who is also an alcoholic therefore supporting the stereotype.
  • A countertype is Audrey McFall. She is also a teacher from Waterloo Road but does not drink meaning that she is the counter-type of this stereotype.

Liverpool
The first stereotype of Liverpudlian people is that they are thieves. This means that the steal and are therefore criminals. This is a negative stereotype of Liverpudlians and may make other people fearful of them.
  • An example of this stereotype is Barry Barry who is a character from Waterloo Road. He is a schoolboy who is from Liverpool but lives in Scotland. He steals a lot and takes part in a lot of criminal activity. His father is also currently in prison from armed robbery which further shows this stereotype.
  • A countertype is Dynasty Barry who is also out of Waterloo Road. She is the sister of Barry Barry and is also the complete opposite. She does not not believe in her brother being a criminal and is in fact inspiring to be in the police force, therefore being the countertype.
The second stereotype of people from Liverpool is that that all take drugs. This is another extremely negative view of people who are from Liverpool and shines a very bad light on Liverpool as a whole.
  • An example of this stereotype is Finn O'Connor who is a schoolboy from Hollyoaks. He has taken drugs and is in prison. This shows that he is an example of this stereotype.
  • A countertype is Dianna O'Connor who is Finn's mother in Hollyoaks. She has never taken drugs and disapproves of Finns criminal lifestyle.
Another stereotype of Liverpudlian people is that they are all big football fans. This is not a negative stereotype and may not affect the city as much as the other but it is something that is not entirely true and has been said about people who are from Liverpool.
  • A stereotype is Kacey Barry who is a school girl from Waterloo Road. She loves to both play and watch football and is therefore a big football fan. She had to face a lot of discrimination when trying to join the football team but didn't give up which shows her true love of football.
  • A countertype is Carol Barry who is Kacey's mother. She is not a football fan and is therefore the opposite of this stereotype.

Newcastle
The first stereotype of people who are from Newcastle is they are violent. This is a stereotype that portrays Geordies in a very negative light. This can make other people scared of people who are from Newcastle as they believe they are all violent.

Another stereotype of Geordies is that they are loud. This may be a stereotype that has been created from the shows that have been made of people who are from Newcastle and is something that has been put with all of the people from there.
  • A stereotype is Charlotte Crosby who is out of the reality show 'Geordie Shore'. She is a person from Newcastle who is typically known for being very loud.
The third stereotype of people who live in Newcastle is that they are often getting drunk. Geordies are shown to always be at the pub or clubs and getting as drunk as they can. This is yet probably another stereotype that has been created from shows that feature people from Newcastle.
  • An example of this stereoytpe is Vicky Pattison who is someone who is in the show 'Geordie Shore'. She often gets drunk and going out with her friends.

Yorkshire
The first stereotype of people who are from Yorkshire is that that are all farmers. This means that they are all seen to dress how stereotypical farmers dress and also how they speak. This may have been created through the fact that farming is popular there or it may have been created through the typical Yorkshire accent.
  • An example of this stereotype is Andy Sugden who is a character from Emmerdale. He is a farmer and is therefore an example of this stereotype.
  • A countertype of this stereotype is Cain Dingle. He is a countertype as he is a mechanic and not a farmer. This shows that not all people from Yorkshire are farmers.
Another stereotype of people who are from Yorkshire is that they are tight with money and do not like spending money. There is a saying that is "Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with all the generosity squeezed out of him" this refers to people from Yorkshire being tighter than people who are from Scotland, which is another stereotype.
  • A stereotype is Zak Dingle who is a character out of Emmerdale. He is shown to be very tight with money and dislikes having to spend money on things.
The third stereotype of people who are from Yorkshire is that that are very argumentative. This is a negative stereotype of people who are from Yorkshire and is something that may may make people view these people in a bad way.
  • An example of this stereotype is also Zak Dingle. He is known for being argumentative and violent so is shown to be a key example of this stereotype.
  • An example of a countertype of this stereotype is Alicia Gallagher who is also a character out of Emmerdale. She is not a character that is seen to be argumentative so is therefore a countertype.

Birmingham
The first stereotype of people who are from Birmingham is that they are un-intelligent. They are shown to be stupid and not as clever as other people. This is a stereotype that may affect how Brummies feel as they may not think they are as good as people who come from different parts of the United Kingdom. This stereotype has come from the Birmingham accent as people feel as though the way in which Brummies speak sounds unintelligent.

The second stereotype of Brummies is that they are criminals. Birmingham is seen as a 'rough' city and therefore the people that live there are also seen as being 'rough'.

Another stereotype of people from Birmingham is that most of them are unemployed. People from Birmingham are seen to not have a job and just live off of benefits. This may have been a stereotype that has been created from the stereotype of them being stupid.

Welsh
The first stereotype of welsh people is that they are not that clever. They are seen and shown to be quite stupid and not know a lot.

  • A stereotype is Stacey who is a character out of Gavin and Stacey. She is a welsh women who is shown to not have much common sense and also not do the cleverest things
Another stereotype of Welsh people is that they are all obsessed with Rugby. This stereotype may have came from a lot of welsh people strongly supporting their rugby team.

  • A stereotype is Bryn West who is a character out of Gavin and Stacey. He is Welsh and is also a really good singer..
  • A countertype is Stacey Shipman who is also a character out of Gavin and Stacey. She is Welsh but is not a good singer showing that she is the countertype of this stereotype.
Irish
A stereotype of Irish people is that they are always happy. This stereotype gives the image that Irish people are always jolly and good company to be around. It does not give the impression that they are ever sad or unhappy.
  • A countertype is Brendan Brady. He is an Irish character from Hollyoaks. He is not a character who is seen to be happy all of the time and dislikes a lot of people. He is therfore the countertype of this stereotype.
Another stereotype of people who are from Ireland is that they drink a lot. This is a stereotype that makes people believe that all of the people from Ireland drink a lot more often and a lot more than people who are from different parts of the world.

  • A stereotype is Mrs Brown who is a character from the comedy 'Mrs Browns Boys'. She is shown to drink a lot and get drunk often.
The third stereotype of Irish people is they love potatoes. This is a stereotype that is not negative and does not make people think about Irish people in a negetive way.

London
The third stereotype of people who are from London is that they are antisocial. This means that they do not want to talk to anyone and would much rather get on with what they have o do without being disturbed. This stereotype may have been created through the fact that London is a big city where everyone is rushing around and nobody really stops to talk to other people.

  • A stereoytpe is Phil Mitchell who is a character out of Eastenders. Phil only likes to talk his family and friends and does not like to be bothered. It is very rare that you see him at a social gathering.
  • A countertype is Mick Carter who is a character out of Eastenders. He is the pub landlord so speaking to people is part of the job that he has. However, he does enjoy talking to people so is therefore the countertype.
The second stereotype of Londoner is that they are criminals. This stereotype may have been created through the high crime rate in London as it is the capital city of England and would have been applied to all of the people from London. This is a negative stereotype that give a bad image of people who live in London.

  • A stereotype Ben Mitchell who is also out of Eastenders and is Phil's son. He is a murderer and has spent time in prison. He is therefore a good example of this stereotype.
  • A countertype Abbie Branning who is a character out of Eastenders. She is not a criminal and had never taken part in any criminal activity showing that she is the countertype of this stereotype.
Another stereotype of people who are from London is that they are all rich. This is because London is an expensive place to live in so the thought is that you must have a lot of money to live there.

  • A stereotype is also Phil Mitchell. He has a successful career and therfore has a lot of money. He is able to pay people a lot of money for them to do things for him,
  • A countertype is Alfie Moon who is a character out of Eastenders. He is struggling for money and currently does not have anything.
Essex
The first stereotype of people who are from Essex is that they are all fake. This means that they have fake hair, fake nails, fake body features, fake tan, etc. This is a stereotype that may have been created through 'reality' programmes that have been created there and it something they has been applies to all of the people who live in Essex.

  • A stereotype is Chloe Simms who stars in the reality show 'The Only Way is Essex'. She loves having fake hair, fake nails, fake tan, etc. and has had plastic surgery. She also has released her own fake tan and has her own salon resulting in her being a key example of this stereotype.
  • An example of a countertype is Gavin who is a character out of Gavin and Stacey. He is from Essex but does not care about his appearance and is not 'fake'.
Another stereotype of Essex people is that they are not intelligent. This may have been made through the way in which they talk and their accent but is a stereotype that makes people think that if someone is from Essex, they are stupid.

  • An example of this stereotype is Joey Essex who is Chloe Simms cousin and also someone who started on The Only Way is Essex. Joey Essex is known for his lack of intelligence and overall general knowledge. He has used this to become more known and more successful through other shows such as 'Educating Joey Essex''. This shows that he is a key example for this stereotype.
  • A countertype is Jessica Wright who is also someone who stars in the reality show 'The Only Way is Essex'. She is not shown to be stupid and she is shown to have common sense.
The third stereotype of people who are from Essex is that they have a lot of money. This is a stereotype that may have also been created through shows that have been make there but it is a stereotype that makes it seem as though all people from Essex have a lot of money that they spend on things to make themselves look better.

  • A ster0eotype is Gemma Collins who stars in the reality show 'The Only Way is Essex'. She has managed to make a lot of money from being in the show but then off of the success has been able to open her shop and clothing range which she will be making even more money off of.
  • A countertype is Smithy who is a character out of Gavin and Stacey. He is from Essex but does not have a lot of money and is typically known for being working class.
